This year, I wanted to push a new innovative within the hockey club in part with England Hockey to send unused and old hockey kit to other parts of the world. England Hockey are working in partnership between the FIH, UK Sport, Ghana Hockey and the African Hockey Federation to deliver an exciting four year expansion plan for hockey in West Africa.
However, biggest challenge to hockey development in West Africa is a huge lack of equipment. It is not uncommon for club players not to have their own sticks and teachers regularly have to deliver to classes of 40+ children with fewer than 10 useable sticks!
We therefore donated any unwanted kit to this project. We were able to collection several shin pads and unused junior mouth guards, old match tops, social tops and Canterbury tracksuit sets.
However, we would like to extend this project over the coming year and are hoping to do another collection at the beginning of term 2 after Christmas so keep your eyes peeled for more information. If you’re treating yourself to a new stick this summer, have several sticks tucked away in the garage or simply outgrown an old stick, then why not give your stick a new life and give someone else the opportunity to play?
