2016 Term 1 Charity Roundup

As the 2016/17 academic year rolled around, UWLHC went into the new year with the prestige of being awarded club of the year. Aims and goals for the following year had been set and preseason begun. As we welcomed one the largest fresher intakes we’ve have in a while, the charity calender kicked off.

Term 1 Saw many new and old charity opportunity and the selection of the charity that we would be raising money for. This year the club voted and selected the breast-cancer charity CoppaFeel! A charity aiming to get young people into the habit of regularly checking their boobs or pecks and if they notice anything stranger or irregular to get it checked out. A fantastic charity and close to my own heart, so hopefully throughout the year we can raise heaps of awareness and money for them.

The first event, charity wise for the academic term was the Canal Clean Up. The morning after Skool Dayz the exec put on their rubber gloves and helped to clean the Warwick canal, with the help of the Canal River Trust, Inland Waterways and Warwick Volunteers. We pulled variety of items out of the canal, including bikes, pipes and trollies.

Next came Mooovember, the annual night out organised for Movember- a charity raising awareness of men’s mental health and prostate cancer. While the men’s hockey club grew an interesting collection of facial hair, we combined forces to organise a night out. A variety of sports clubs all descended on Moo Bar, a poor male fresher lost champagne 5s and hopefully a good time was had by all. Through t-shirt sales and charity bucket collecting on the night, UWHC raised £228.90 altogether an increase on last years total.

Week 8 saw the club coming together with American Football to collect donations for the Warwick and Leamington Foodbank. Over the course of three days an overwhelming amount of donations were collected. Thank you to everyone who donated and if you want to learn more feel free to check out the website post here:

The final big charity event of the term was CMD. The annual dance competition in which sports teams competed against each other raising money for Sports Relief. Unfortunately, this year the title was not to be ours and cricket scooped the title for a second year. Read more and watch the video all over again here:

There was also a range of CoppaFeel! events put on this term. Including a Cake Sale where we raised an incredible £174. There was also a comedy night with Warwick Comdey Soceity which raised £47.22 and a free nail salon in association with Barry M to get more people aware of the charity and the symptoms of breast cancer.

UWLHC has had a wonderful first term raising money and donation for four different charities and amassing £450 and a heck tonnes of donations of food and litter cleared from the canal. I want to say a huge thank you to the boys’ club for organising Moovember with me, Warwick Volunteers in particular to Jenny and Kim for being so accommodating and helping with all these wonderful schemes to get involved in. Another thank you goes to the UBT team at CoppaFeel! Warwick but most importantly to the girls in the club for giving up their time, enjoy and support this term. Look out for a range of different activities set to take place in Term 2 including a day at the Dog’s Trust, the Half Marathon, 3 Peaks Challenge and a Boobette talk.
