1st XI Term 1 Round-Up
The first team have had an absolutely incredible first half of the season, sitting at the top of midlands 2A in BUCS, 2nd in Div 1 of WWHL, and still in the race for the cup! We have scored 80 goals in the process - so that averages five goals per game - free scoring to say the least. The competition for golden stick looks incredibly tight this year, with Bevis leading the way on 17, then Bean (15), and Hollerbach (13). We look forward to keeping the goals coming in term 2.
Our season began with an excellent and high quality fresher intake. Eva and Becky have added quality at the back, Emma Hampton has added pace and delivery into the D, Hollerbach has added goals and outrageous skills, and finally Chloe has stepped up from the 2s mid-way through the term to add some quality up front!
With the new freshers settled, we began our BUCs promotion campaign with a storming 4-0 victory over Notts 4s, and this was definitely just a taste of the things to come, as a week later we went on to beat Loughborough 5s 10-2! Next up was a top-of-the-table clash against Leicester, but after two brilliantly executed short corner drills straight from the training ground, we ran out 2-1 winners, securing our position at the top of the table. What followed were three comfortable victories against Oxford (4-1), Harper Adams (6-0), and Nottingham 4s on the return fixture (6-0), completing a perfect first half to the BUCs season.
These results are a real testament to the hard work the girls have been putting into everything from our Monday morning fitness sessions, to our twice-weekly training sessions on the new waterbase astro (see right, along with our swanky new Akuma kit, modelled by Bridget), and we seek to maintain the exact same ethos entering term 2.
In terms of Saturday league, we had a frustrating start, losing our first game to Birmingham Uni. But hindsight is a wonderful thing, and as it happens, that game has been our only loss of the season so far! After we adjusted and consolidated our team, we have really gone onto play some free-flowing hockey, thrashing multiple teams in the league. Highlights include 9-0, 9-1, and 7-0 victories against Stratford 2s, Olton 3s and Solihull Blossomfield respectively. Due to these outstanding results, we have the best goal difference in the league at 29, and sit just 4 points behind Birmingham in the race for promotion – an exciting end to the season approaches.
We also await Loughborough in the quarter finals of the BUCS Midlands Conference Cup. On our way to the quarters, we have beaten Nottingham 6s 7-0, which was rather a family affair with our very own Beaney playing against her sister! We also beat UEA 1s 2-1 in what was a (very far) away day.
UWLHC would love some silverware, and we will put everything into each cup game in order to achieve this.
Finally, many thanks go to both Kali, who has provided us with such high-quality training sessions, and to Kasim, our match manager, for his valuable instructions from the sidelines, and for his constant dedication to helping us push for promotion.
We all look forward to term 2, in which we will work hard to maintain the standard of our high quality performances from term 1, and not forgetting to… SHOE THE POLY
