This has been an absolutely incredible term (and year) for the 1st XI, and all credit must go to the girls for working so hard to achieve it all.
With only two BUCs wins needed in term two to clinch the title, we had it comfortably secured in week 5 of term, with a thrilling 5-3 victory vs Leicester. The celebrations were one to remember, and I’m not sure we’ll ever get tired of chanting ‘we are Warwick 1s’. Also, big hand to the girls for still stepping up for the remaining league games post-title win, beating Oxford and Harper Adams to complete a flawless 9/9 wins in Midlands 2A. Perfection.
The rest of our Wednesdays were focused
on the cup, which definitely turned out to be one to remember (spoiler: we won the cup!!). We beat Loughborough 11-0 (yes really) in the quarters, and when the semi final came around, it seemed like it wasn’t Leicester we were going to being competing against, but rather the beast from the east. After at least 3 cancellations, the weather finally cleared, and we travelled to Leicester on a rather ominous Monday evening to fight it out for a place in the final. And, after a game of two halves, with a comfortable 2-0 score at half time, but frustrating 2-2 score at full time, it was going to have to go down to penalty flicks. Even after missing a couple of flicks, and Leicester scoring theirs, we snatched back the momentum, scored the final three, and proceeded into the final. Shout-out to Mari for making some out-of-this-world saves too, what a hero.
We had little time to recover from the adrenaline rush that was the semi final, with the final up vs Nottingham 3s just two days later. It seems that we enjoyed the excitement of penalty flicks so much so that we decided to do it all over again in the final! With another full time score of 2-2, we stepped up to seal the cup on flicks. Thankfully, Nottingham bottled it, and we didn’t even need all five takers. 4-2 it ended. It would also be impossible not to mention the fact that this is the first time that any team from either hockey club has won the conference cup, so it truly was a moment to remember.
…and it doesn’t end there!
This term also saw us take on local rivals Coventry in the annual Varsity fixture. Again, we showed a lot of class, and left nothing to doubt (unlike the boys), winning 8-0. I don’t need to say anymore, as this picture epitomises it perfectly. We also starred across the whole back page of the boar, representing the university in one of the most convincing varsity wins of weekend.
…not forgetting Saturday league!
Saturday has been up and down this term, and promotion still hangs very much in the balance. The highlight was undoubtedly beating Birmingham 4s in our final game of the term, breaking a longstanding curse. It also saw us close the gap on them at the top, meaning we are still in for a shot at promotion when we return for our final game next weekend.
I can’t thank the girls enough for their hard work this year, and the difficulty I have had in keeping this report succinct is testament enough to how much this team have achieved this year. I have no doubt that Mari is going to lead the team wonderfully next year, and I wish her and the rest of them the best of luck as they move up to 1A.
