1st XI Term 1 Round Up
The 1s have had a very busy term 1, being promoted into a new BUCs league and facing a lot of great teams on Saturday as well. Currently, we are in the fourth place in the Midlands 1A league, and in 8th place in the WWHL. After a difficult start, we are now going up in the rankings and winning more and more games. With the second half of the season and Varsity still ahead, we look forward to keeping the goals coming and getting even more wins in term 2!
This year we permanently added two freshers in the team. Chelsea has been an excellent addition to our midfield, dribbling around our opponents and taking on a major role in short corners. Lara has been playing every position on the pitch and has been doing an amazing job! Her first time playing as a forward had her scoring two goals in ten minutes and her solid play is invaluable in the back and midfield as well. Ella, Hannah VB, Lucy, Charlotte, who have been playing for the 2s last year have put in a lot of hard work over summer and in training, and are now valued 1s members, giving us a dedicated group of amazing players for our games this season! Apart from our main 16, we have also seen some amazing play from 2s players like Chong, Amelie, Ellie, Rosie, Sanem and Vicky, which is very promising for our squad next year.
Being promoted into the Midlands 1A league in BUCs, we have faced excellent teams from Nottingham, Loughborough, and Worcester. The higher standard took some adjusting at first, but through a couple of hard-fought games, we are safely in 4th place. The highlight of term 1 was the 4-0 win against Worcester 1s, although we also saw some amazing play against Birmingham 3s. With 3 matches left to play, we have full trust in our ability to stay up in midlands 1A and get even better results next season!
We had a slow start in the WWHL, as we started out by playing some of the best teams in our league, but after we got our freshers in the team and all the new players in our team got used to each other a bit more, we have been getting some great wins. Although we are currently in 8th place, the center of the table is incredibly close in our league, sow e are sure to gain a couple of places throughout the second half of the season.
This year we have made some great steps off the pitch as well! This year we are a part of Warwick Performance Sport again, and the Warwick Sport trainers, especially Erika and Mitch, have been helping us out in the gym and with fitness. Through the great effort of the girls in the 1s, some of whom had never done strength training before, we have seen some massive improvements in the gym and will continue this throughout term 2.
Last but not least, we have been very lucky with our coach Kali, and our match manager Knighty. Kali’s training has been instrumental in improving our team and Knighty has been great at motivating the team for our games. With their support, we will continue pushing ourselves for the rest of the year. Looking ahead at term 2, we are all excited for some quality hockey and of course another Varsity match where we can shoe the poly for the 29th time!
