1st XI Round Up | Term 2

After a challenging, but rewarding Term 1, with some tough matches and hard-fought wins, the 1st XI went into Term 2 with a lot to fight for.

In BUCs, we still had the chance to stay up in Midlands 1A because of our tie with Birmingham 3s and our win against Worcester 1s. Where we were plagued by injuries in Term 1, most of our team was now fit and back on our feet. We didn’t have many BUCs matches left, but every match was important. Although we didn’t win our BUCs matches in Term 2, we showed great improvement compared to Term 1, which could be seen in our results. Through our hard work, combined with a fair bit of luck with the league rearrangement, we managed to stay up in Midlands 1A!

Where we had very few BUCs matches this term, we had plenty of WWHL matches left to play! Our first match was against Hampton-in-Arden and although they beat us 4-1 in our first match, we now played them off the pitch and won 3-1! The team kept up this amazing play throughout the term, taking points from tough matches and scoring some beautiful goals along the way. The biggest high of the term was definitely our 7-0 win against Warwick 2s, which we got to celebrate at hockey ball!

Of course, I haven’t forgotten about the biggest event of Term 2: Varsity! The 1st XI was joined by the leavers from the 2s and went into the match with a full 16. Where last year the pitch was frozen and we felt like we were playing a

mid-winter match, this year we were playing in near-tropical conditions. This was a real test for our fitness and we struggled a bit more than previous years. Coventry even managed to get a shot on goal! This was unheard of, so we stepped up our game and took home a solid 2-0 win. Becky Hall tried her hardest to teach Coventry’s defence some skills, but even after a 70-minute masterclass, their players did not manage to stop a single Becky roll.

At the end of this year, we are parting ways with our coach Kali. He has been with this club such a long time and has made a massive impact on many generations of UWLHC magwomen! We thank him so much for everything he has put into this club and this team.

The girls of the 1st XI worked hard this year, fighting for the win any time they were on the pitch, and I am super proud to have called myself the captain of this amazing team! The hard work put in by the whole team, our on-pitch coast Kali, our match manager Knighty, and our S&C trainers Erika and Mitch shows and has given us some amazing play this season. Now it is time for me to hand over the captaincy to Lara and I am sure she will do amazing, as we head into another tough season in Midlands 1A!

Final congratulations to:

  • Player of the year: Georgie Clee!

  • Most-improved: Ella Deregowska!

  • Our coaches: Kali, Knighty, Erika, and Mitch

  • Our leavers: Georgie Clee, Hannah French, Phoebe Hessian, and Roxy Fisher
