What a term it has been for UWLHC charity! This year we have chosen to support two amazing charities.
The first is our national charity Teenage Cancer Trust (https://www.teenagecancertrust.org/) and the money we raise this year will be going to providing young people with essential support throughout their cancer journey, before, during and after.
Our second chosen charity is Coventry Cyrenians (http://www.coventrycyrenians.co.uk/) and the money we raise will go towards giving those in Coventry and Warwickshire who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, individualised support to promote and enhance their lives.
We started off the charity year cold, wet and a bit hungover at the annual Canal Clean Up, the perfect setting for some quality exec bonding. On the day we helped remove an obscene amount of trollies, plastic bags, a pole, bicycles and even a golf buggy from the Leamington canal. That’s right, a golf buggy!
We then went on to host ‘Active Consent’ in partnership with CRASAC, one of our charities from last year. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to have some non-traditional British weather and the sun came out in full force along with a whole host of sports clubs. This event was an amazing opportunity for Warwick uni to get chatting about consent and starting open, honest and non-judgemental conversations. We also made some beautiful consent butterflies, ate ‘fries’ and impressed with our hula hooping skills (but of course it was Sports Officer Charlotte Lloyd who outshone us all).
That takes us to early-November, aka the best time to host a Christmas Quiz. This year in an attempt to keep building bridges UWLHC and UWMHC extended the invite to UWMXHC. Despite a change in location, an unforeseen head injury and a non-existent microphone the night was a huge success, raising £270 for Teenage Cancer Trust and UWMHC’s charity Mind.
UWLHC’s performance in CMD Let’s Dance for Sport Relief is always one of my term highlights and this year was no exception. The hard work that all the girls put in, especially our choreographers Vicky and Lauryn, really paid off as they were crowned CMD’s choice (aka the only title that matters)!
Later on in Movember, we supported UWMHC’s… interesting… attempts at facial hair, by hosting a Movember Monday social at Kasbah. Despite the pres being relatively quiet the nightclub itself was packed with proud t-shirt wearers and we ended up raising an impressive £180 for the men’s health charity. The following Wednesday UWMHC and UWLHC also hosted Movember circles so that everyone had another chance to show off their sexy t-shirts.
Speaking of charitable circles; our lovely social secretaries Alice and Lauryn also hosted a Christmas Circle and in exchange for helping us down our pints, or in my case squash, all term we were asked to bring donations for our chosen local charity, Coventry Cyrenians. What a wonderful way to end 2019 with UWLHC.
I can’t wait to start the new decade and my final term as Charities Secretary with even more exciting charity opportunities! Some highlights to look forward to are; the February family challenge month (the most wonderful time of the year), the Draycote Water run, the Boob Ball, and so many more. Also, I want to say a big thank you to everyone for your generosity so far and we cannot wait to continue to support our chosen charities in 2020.
Lots of love from,
Your favourite Charity Case x
