3rd XI Term One Round Up

Despite the many setbacks COVID has thrown at us this term, the 3s have pulled together wonderfully. Although we’ve only managed to play 4 games so far, we’ve shown great hope for the rest of the season.

We had a brilliant turn out for preseason, with everyone ready to train hard and make the most out of playing hockey again. With some old girls returning, and some help from the 4s, we drew 1-1 in our first game back – a score we could only have dreamed of last season!

After a glimpse of how our season could progress, we were all determined to improve and work together as a team. Unfortunately, the team then went into isolation, leaving us unable to train for a couple of weeks, instead re-entering the world of virtual fitness to help keep us active. With many of the girls still isolating for our first game back, those playing gave it their all, and despite some lovely play, we sadly lost 4-0.

It was now time to welcome our freshers, with 19 new faces in the 3s, all of them showed great enthusiasm and have made their mark in the team. Even though we hadn’t been able to have many trainings all together yet, we won our first game 3-1 against Sutton Coldfield 7s with a goal from Florence and two from Ingrid (both freshers!). A special shout out to Florence who seemed to here there and everywhere, helping to control the back as well as having a beautiful straight strike.

Although our final match felt more like we had joined the swim team with the weather, that didn’t stop us as we beat Rugby and East Warwickshire 4s 6-0!! With a hattrick from Safeeyah, another two goals from Ingrid, and one from Izzy, this has to be the highlight of the term. With Sasha staying strong, controlling the right back, and always helping to us to push the ball up the pitch saw her voted WOTM.

Lockdown may have put a halt to hockey, but we used this as an opportunity to bond, albeit virtually, as a team. We kept active, continuing our Tuesday virtual fitness sessions, many of us smashing Move for Movember and getting festive completing a 12 days of Christmas fitness challenge (well done to Alison for acing this!). As well as participating in lots of club socials and a 3s bake-a-long.

It’s been a pleasure captaining this team through the first term and I can’t wait to be playing again with everyone soon. Despite not playing as many matches as other teams in our league, we’re currently sitting 7th on the league table so fingers crossed term 2 sees much more hockey (maybe some BUCS??), and more great success from the 3s.

Happy New Year and 3s love x
